Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was instilled with the desire to explore her love of art through her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt was a registered nurse working night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to art literature or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered that art can be an effective way to spread political activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience and advised DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay lived in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the local town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing content in broadcast journalism when she was still at the college. She started as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given duty of looking after the home and looking through the rubbish of one members of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalism and the jobs she was assigned, she decided to pursue a career as a publicist. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio following her graduation from college. From this position she started her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. She also started several marketing and lifestyle websites like her own Urban Beauty Collective.
